Jennifer Caie, Looking Forward, 2020
Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas, 24”x 24”
"This opportunistic gull, glances over its shoulder before popping open a dinner of shellfish. It is looking forward to both the low tide meal and the time at hand. The paint I used to represent the summery shore is textured by sand. The shells are painted with thick, impasto palette knife strokes. This mixed media approach lends contrast to the smoothness in the gull’s feathers. When I saw this scene along Canadian coastal shores, I contemplated the gull and considered its behaviour. This painting speaks of the gull’s last glance towards the past, the last chance it has to seize the moment, and the hope of continuity."
